Description

Resilience is the modern term for Backup. Knowing what to carry, and more importantly what not to is a question we are frequently asked. Most people would baulk at a tent, yet I remember that’s exactly what Sir Ranulph Fiennes took with him on his 2000 Arctic Solo Expedition, so it is obviously dependent upon where you’re going and for how long.

Scott and I tend to carry the same backup kit for all of our Scottish expeditions, which are at most a couple of days, more normally a day. The only variance is summer and winter kit.

The following are duplicate items we carry for winter:

GPS Garmin eTrex H High-Sensitivity GPS Navigator Handheld bought on eBay for £15
Headtorch Our old Silva LED headtorches
Power LEDLENSOR Lithium-Ion for our MH10 plus, 4 x Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA
Clothing Sox, gloves & hat only because cold hands and/or feet can be crippling and 20% of our heat is lost thru our heads
Maps SatMap Active 20 Platinum’s have all UK maps we need, but the foldy up type are the ones we use in the main
Emergency kit A shoe lace

This battery actually has a higher capacity than the stock battery, so we swap them around and carry the stock as our spare.
