Description

Silva Explore 4 Headlamp

This is our No 1 headlamp and for good reason!

I (Lyle) used to carry this as my backup headtorch. Nowadays it’s the one I mainly use because it’s:

  • Small
  • Lightweight (87g)
  • Properly waterproof (IP7 which means it can be submerged to 1 metre for 30 minutes)
  • Uses regular batteries (I use AAA rechargeable)
  • Has a battery level indicator

…and most importantly:

  • The brilliant white beam is spot-on for most nightnav environments (I use the medium setting 60m beam/ battery life 45 hrs)
  • Red when I’m moving and wish to preserve my night-vision
  • Orange beam for map reading

It was developed for the Norwegian military and for the money it is so far ahead of the pack; genuinely there isn’t a better headtorch available for this sort of money.

Footnotes

  • Forget the rechargeable version (Explore 4RC). You’re stuck if it goes flat and it costs more.
  • Professionally, as in mountain rescue or taking large groups onto the hill, I use the Ledlenser MH10 as my main headtorch, the uniformity of the light and battery life being better, but it costs more than 3x as much!
