Emergency Sighting Signal Mirror
At the Canadian national search and rescue conference, SARSCENE, held in Nova Scotia, one of the other presenters was a survival instructor from the Royal Canadian Airforce. She kindly taught me how to correctly use their issue (Mil-spec: Type 1/MA23) emergency sighting signal mirror. I had been using the clumsy British issue and method adopted by most European services.
Our version of this mirror differs little: a lager hole to accommodate a 550 Paracord lanyard, a protective removable film in addition to the permanent protective cover and we have simplified the instructions on the back of the mirror in line with the Canadian method.
The 3M Retroreflective aiming aid enables you to signal targets from miles away, and the lightweight Lexan-polycarbonate (24 grams) will not break if dropped, is scratch resistant and floats in water and its small (75mmx50mm).
You’ll frequently read claims of them being used to signal over 15 miles away, we’ve even read 35 miles; in theory this is true. The main problem becomes accuracy and we’ve tested ours out to 5 miles reliably; beyond this it is possible, yet it is much more hit and miss, despite what others may claim!.
Before you need it for real it is important to become practised in its use.
