Description
Chinagraph/Grease Pencil Pack
We have spent ages trialling lots of different Chinagraph/Grease pencils and have finally found the best – Staedtler Lumocolour Glasochrom permanent pencil. We both use them for route planning and for out on the hill. We have put the three most used colours together in a simple one-stop-shop Chinagraph/Grease Pencil Pack to save you time hunting around for individual pencils!
- Wood cased pencil – won’t go soggy
- Permanent and waterproof writing
- Writes well on laminated and wet laminated maps!
- Can be knife sharpened in the field
- Smudge resistant
Pencils verses Pens
We made the simple distinction of using the pens indoors for planning and the pencils when navigating, with the exception of one pen always on a rucksack strap (See Lumocolor Pen Expert Tips)
Expert Tips
- These are permanent pencils and have good resistance against rubbing off in the field or being washed off by inclement weather. Use a pre-injection medi-swab to clean your annotations of your map at the end of the day!
- Cut the pencils in half to make them easy to store
The Shaven Raspberry three colour protocol for map annotation
This protocol will help you in planning your trip marking everything from your proposed route to noting the local magnetic declination. In SAR they can be used to plan your mission define search areas and make notes on route and assist with dynamic decision making in the field.

I teach courses and to have, after scanning and printing maps put a heavy laminated coating over it. The real ink pens get easily wiped of before they are dry and after that a bit difficult to erase as well. Also..you need to seal it otherwise they dry out.
These pencils…are great, never thought they would write so well on such a surface. Easy to sharpen en you know for sure it will work, since it is not ink based, but grease based. I am going to exchange my ink pens for this. Excellent equipment.

Hi
I can recommend the pencils but NOT on older LAMFOLD maps. Scott advised I try the AQUA 3 brand of laminated map so I did and the pencils work superbly on these. Yes I did some extensive testing of my own where I simulated using maps folded in the area I was working and getting out and replacing into a cargo pocket. There was a significant difference. The pens supplied by Scott work a treat on both forms of map.

What can be said about these pencils? A pencil’s a pencil right. WRONG these are superb for marking OS Active maps smooth clear and bright and cleans off easy with the alcohol prep pads. The cheapest place I have seen for three different colours on the internet. They came well packaged and super fast great service from Shaven Raspberry as always

Good quality pencils. Shortened them to fit in a pouch and they sharpened up again nicely; no problems with the ‘lead’. Marks nice and clear on an OS Active Explorer map. Takes a bit of rubbing to remove the marks. Have yet to test them in weather.

Great quality and just the job. Saves you thumbing the map and potentially [very] loosing your position or destination.

With these beauties you can write ‘IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS’ on the side of any tin and it stays there- brilliant.
Jonathan Stiles –
This is my second order for this item from shavenraspberry.com in the last decade. I use them on waterproof ‘plastic paper’ laser printed maps and various other sundry applications. I am obviously very happy with these pencils and recommend them.
Postal service to Finland was extremely fast. Thank you.

Not yet used “in the field” but experiments at home show they work as expected. I had to resort to white spirit to remove the chinagraph, but perhaps I need to persevere with the alchohol wipes kindly supplied.
Roel Willems –
I was looking for these pencils after reading the book. Good package of 3 useful colors for marking maps, easy to remove with alcohol wipes from laminated maps (or waterproof map cover).
Bryan –
Excellent pencil and does a well done job
Michael Kelly –
Excellent pencils
Michael –
Good pencils, do the job well, I first got some a few years back, after reading Lyle’s book.
Stephen Whitehouse –
Very good product, I always use them to plot out my route before walking. Excellent service too.
Sam RavenWolf –
The sachet wipes provided do not remove the markings of the black in this range., the red just about came off. It required paint stripper and a metal scourer for the black.
However Scott had very kindly offered to replace my map if neither his suggested acetone or white spirits worked.
Too impractical to erase markings this way, will try the non-permanent graphite pencils in Brothertons’ book (p100).
Would much prefer a finer nib aswell. The sharpened tips wore down very quickly, and made neat notation and symbol making difficult.
If anyone wants the ones purchased they are welcome to them. I am happy for Scott to pass on my details.
